This is a summary of how Highcliffe Primary School delivers music education to all pupils across three areas – curriculum music, extra-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes are planned for future years.
Part A: Curriculum music
Music is taught at Highcliffe Primary School using the Leicestershire Music Primary Scheme of Work. It is a progressive scheme that delivers six units per year group covering and developing skills in the following areas: pulse, voice, rhythm, pitch, technology and 20th Century Music. Each unit comprises of six lessons and is delivered each half term on a weekly basis. During lesson time, children have the opportunity to sing and play instruments. The school has an inclusive culture that gives equality of opportunity to the music education for all groups of pupils. Our music curriculum is informed by the model music curriculum and is supported by the Leicestershire Music Hub. All teaching staff have been trained by the Leicestershire Music Hub on how to deliver the Leicestershire Music Primary Scheme. We are also proud to report that we have been awarded with the Bronze Music Mark Award.
Part B: Extra-curricular music
Highcliffe Primary School offers a wealth of music tuition that is delivered outside of lesson time. Pupils have the opportunity to learn to play the keyboard, guitar, a range of stringed instruments as well as the African drums. This can be through one- to- one or small group tuition delivered by specialist music teachers. Pupils can begin to work towards gaining graded awards that reflect the progress that they make. There is also the chance for KS2 pupils to join the school choir, that meets on a weekly basis. In addition to this, pupils can become part of a rock band through our weekly Rock Steady sessions. All tuition and practice take place in our spacious, well equipped music room.
Information on how to access tuition is sent out regularly via parent mail and is present on our Music board. In some cases, there is the opportunity to access subsidised tuition fees, especially for children with pupil premium eligibility.
Part C: Musical experiences
Pupils have a regular opportunity to become emersed in musical activity through our weekly KS1 and KS2 singing assemblies. Singing and listening to a range of music is also part of other assemblies that the children attend.
Furthermore, pupils who have extra-curricular music lessons perform to the school and their parents on a termly basis. Our wonderful African drumming concerts strongly encourage active audience participation.
Highcliffe Primary School also welcomes visitors into School (such as Rock Kidz) that perform to pupils and provide active workshops to all year groups. Sometimes, these experiences are provided free of charge to all pupils.
Pupils also have the opportunity to attend the De Montfort Hall or Loughborough Town Hall to watch an annual pantomime. This is a whole school experience, where pupils are actively encouraged to participate in a range of songs. These trips are subsidised for the children with pupil premium eligibility.
In the future
Development points:
To broaden the range of musical opportunities experienced, including within the community by looking to strengthen high school feeder links and planning Live Music opportunities that meet the needs of the children in raising aspiration. Planned start date: Summer Term 2025.
To develop staff confidence and subject knowledge further by utilising CPD opportunities for wider staff, including support with making accurate assessments. Planned start date: Spring 2025.
To develop the curricular and extra-curricular offer to be more varied to include greater singing opportunities and to make music using technology. Planned start date: Spring 2025.
To monitor the implementation of the new Leicestershire Music Scheme, through lesson visits and pupil and staff voice on a termly basis. Planned start date: Autumn Term 2024.
