Gladiator ‘Steel’ Inspires Pupils

Zack George – better known as ‘Steel’ from BBC One’s Gladiators – paid an unforgettable visit to Highcliffe Primary School at the end of May, delivering an inspiring and energising assembly to all our pupils.

Born in Leicestershire, Zack captivated the children with stories of his upbringing and his journey to becoming an elite CrossFit athlete and television Gladiator. He spoke passionately about the importance of maintaining both physical and mental wellbeing, sharing personal insights and practical advice that resonated with pupils and staff alike.

Zack encouraged the children to embrace positivity and to believe in their dreams, revealing that his own dream of becoming a Gladiator began when he was just 10 years old. He even shared a heartwarming photo of himself at that age alongside a current image of him in full Gladiator gear – a powerful reminder that dreams really can come true with dedication and perseverance.

Throughout the assembly, Zack emphasised the value of mindfulness, healthy eating, hydration and breathing techniques – tools he uses daily to stay focused and grounded. He introduced the concept of “glimmers” – those small, joyful moments in everyday life that are often overlooked but deserve to be noticed and celebrated.

The children were particularly thrilled when Zack demonstrated one of his signature moves: a flawless handstand that earned a rapturous round of applause from the entire hall!

Following the assembly, Zack visited each classroom, handing out stickers and water bottles, and taking time to answer a wide range of questions. Pupils were eager to learn more about his inspirations, his daily routine as a Gladiator, and even which of his fellow Gladiators are the funniest or strongest. He also shared how his family and friends feel about his unique and demanding career.

It was a truly eye-opening and motivational day – one that our pupils will remember for a long time to come.

A huge thank you to the Highcliffe PTA for organising such an enriching and memorable event.
